A while back I was looking over the member listings on the APA site and I clicked on a members website - WWW.polyscan.co.za It is owned by Clifton Coetzee in Johannesberg, South Africa. The home page clearly promotes a 'Baker-Digital Voice Stress Aanlyzer'. He goes on to say it is 'far superior to the outdated lie detection systems such as CVSA, LANTERN, TRUSTER and POLYGRAPH' The entire web site is a promotion for his business using the Baker digital voice stress analysis system.I wrote to APA atleast three months ago to be sure they knew about the site and that id could be accessed from their site however I have not received a response. What are the thoughts on this. Am I over reacting or is this something that: a) An APA member should not be promoting and b) The apa should not be allowing a link from their site to this one. Polybob,I agree! This is highly inappropriate and any link currently enforce from APA should be terminated. The problem is, like many of our ethical/ professional questions, is it illegal? No. Is it "clearly" in violation of ethical standards and conduct; probably, but this should be addressed ASAP by the power to be. It certainly contradicts and most likely violates the APA position statement on the CVSA, presenting a possible member ethics violation. Any APA type officers out there willing to put forward their $.02 and get this handled or addressed....? Or at least, let the humble masses know what you're doing about this. If we are to take punitive action against a member, we must first find that the member has violated a provision of the by-laws, Standards of Conduct, Constitution or has engaged in "conduct which brings, or may tend to bring, discredit to the Association or the polygraph profession." In the instant case, the argument could be made that the examiner in question is conducting polygraph tests (lie detector tests)in violation of Paragraph 3.5 "Instrumentation and Recording" which requires that polygraph tests be conducted with APA approved instrumentation and shall record at a minimum, respiration, electrodermal activity and relative blood volume and pulse changes. Obviously this examiner is not using those minimum recording cxomponents while doing voice stress examinations. Additionally, under 3.9 "Testing" the examiner shall use only a validated testing technique. Finally, the examiner may have violated 4.8 "Advertisements" when he knowingly published or caused to be published any false or misleading statements or advertisements relating to the Association or the polygraph profession. At a minimum, we can certainly remove any link between his site and the APA site and I will look into doing just that immediately. As far as the grievance procedure, that requires someone to file such a "written" grievance and mail it to the APA National office. I often hear "I told the APA and they didn't do anything about it." Well in order for action to be taken, one must "tell the APA" in writing and sign the complaint so that it can be affored the status of a grievance and investigated accordingly.[This message has been edited by skipwebb (edited 03-22-2005).] IP: Logged |

Skip: Thanks for your response. I was not really looking for any punitive action to be taken against the member. My only objection was that he had the voice stress information displayed front and center on his web site that was being listed on the APA site. I just felt that the right thing for the APA to do was to not allow someone, even a member, to display and advertise something that is so contrary to polygraph. As far as just 'telling' someone at APA about the problem - I emailed the national office and also a long standing board member. I guess maybe I should have known I needed to do more but I thinksome sort of response would have been in order. Anyway - thanks again for the response and what ever you do to look into the matter. I was not looking to cause grief to a fellow misguided member. I just do not want to assist him in his promotion of VSA.
